We Howl Too

"…And in this I saw the best minds of my generation"
damaged and disillusioned
confused by the chaos of their world
Who passed through hall ways advertising product on the hearts of their
shirts unaware of their cooperation with the corporation
Who upon growing sought reality in television and were left to peel the bubblegum off
their cheeks after tv's needle popped culture
Who wandered lost at the sight of identities projected thru hair and jeans and brands,
people branded as thug or punk or pop only tip toe touching each other styles when they took a wrong step
Who watched intently as their peers' credit card destinies were directed across HDTV flat
screens until their hands became remote controls and their eyes seedless pods growing nothing, sitting together like soil collectively collecting a collective consumer conscious
Who bit their lips and scribbled in pads as they listened to their own musicians
shouting KILL! KILL! KILL! BUY! BUY! BUY! SELL! SELL! SELL! your self! Over booty bouncing beats that bumped beyond the speaker box into silent children souls
Who fell back with horror as their politicians stirred oil into their morning coffees and
sprinkled blood diamond sugar packets to sweeten their Kool, as entire cities drowned without Aid and toy soldiers melted daily without face
Who banged their brains on books as their pundits allowed themselves to be talk-showed
into corners, generally speaking in generalities, turning grays into red and blue
political gang colors
Whose youth were divided into red and blue gang colors…

The Storm

The Sound of the Storm
I am in love with the sound of the storm,
how the rain falls so gently you can hear a mother
reading bedtime stories to her child, or erupts in war,
clouds firing crystal bullets at the ground.
I am in love with its sadness,
every raindrop, a tear, and the sky
like the dark flecks in your eyes.
I am in love with the surprise—
shotgun thunder, flash of light—
how once startled, we pause,
reflect, sit together.
And how it begins, suddenly,
like a drunken argument,
until nothing is left dry,
then stops
and a butterfly beats her wings
as if it stopped for her alone
to reclaim the sky.
